The softness and beautiful detail of this piece caught my eye right and pulled me in. To then discover it was drawn on drafting film, not a traditional drawing surface for graphite had me wanting to run home and try this myself. It feels both simple and complex at the same time. Sometimes a white background or a lot of empty negative space can compete with or take a way from a subject, I believe in this work, it strengthens it and showcases the soft beauty and intricate rendering of the subject. The strong vertical of the birch trunk contrasting with the more active diagonals of the leaves create a quiet energy that I feel captures the essence and spirit of a birch tree and adds to the interest of the drawing. It shows a thoughtfulness and true understanding of the subject.
